A decade-long Maoist insurgency in Nepal killed more than 10,000 people. In 2006, a Seven Party Alliance (SPA) reached a 12-point understanding with the Maoists toward a common goal of ending the rule of King Gyanendra, reinstating parliament, and opening elections to all parties for a Constituent Assembly to draft a constitution.

In a community-based initiatives 2010 newsletter, World Health Organization published an article on a "case demonstration in the central highlands of Afghanistan." Through such activities as training and empowering community health workers and organizing mothers into women's action groups, child mortality decreased by almost 50%.  Future Generations Afghanistan, a local nongovernmental organization, provided technical support for this project.

It is also one of the continent’s most densely populated and land-constrained countries. Systematic divide-and-rule strategies under colonial administration helped to dissolve the unity which existed under Burundi’s ancient monarchy.
