Voices from Haiti - A Song for Social Change

Six communities of Cite Soleil have formed a youth-led social change movement known as Konbit Soley Leve, based on the traditional Haitian cooperatives called konbits. Listen to the acoustic song (at the bottom of the page), "Konbit," by Gueldy Rene of "La Reference" and Bois Neuf of Cite Soleil, Haiti, as they express their vision for an empowered Haiti.

See the lyrics below.

[Verse 1] Come a little bit closer, come listen, those who are concerned,
A konbit has begun...
It's a dream every Haitian has been dreaming
A new Haiti, without filth...
I'd love to see an educated people,
Easy to adapt
To see all parents with a new mission,
A government that would take responsibility
Education, Health, and Willingness
Across the land; this is what's primary (fundamental)
[chorus]
Konbit, Konbit
To save a nation...
Konbit, Konbit,
To save a pride
Konbit, Konbit,
To advance a youth...
Konbit, Konbit...

[verse 2]
Let's clean up, let's plant, let's give water
So that change can sing
Canals we have traced, we dig,
Lighting everywhere
We're speaking of the future
Laws that all children obe
To become a good democracy
Without demagogy
Work....becomes available for all
Battles... old political abuse.... ends

[solo]
We become a nation respected by all,
a district rehabilitated
We'll work to advance our technology
whoa-o-o-o-ah-o
There are others who don't wish to see us form a konbit (to gather),
for us to advance..
But finally, we open our eyes, we see,
and we decide to make...
Konbit, Konbit
