Future Generations works in partnership with communities and government to build on successes in such areas as maternal and child health, nature conservation, peacebuilding, income generation, and governance. Through this three-way partnership, local successes grow to have regional and national level impact.
Four countries are strategic areas of focus:
Afghanistan: Across four of the most insecure provinces of Afghanistan, more than 300 village councils have established literacy and health classes for 21,000 women and girls in homes and mosques. Farmer’s clubs are improving nutrition and agriculture, and 220 soccer teams for boys and separate teams for girls are creating the conditions of hope.
China: In Tibet, 600 community volunteers known as Pendebas spread conservation concepts and improve health and income among families living within the region's remote nature preserves. In 2007, Future Generations began working nationwide through the Green Long March, a Chinese youth movement for the environment involving students from 32 universities.
India: At the headwaters of the Brahmaputra river, Future Generations partners with a growing network of more than 800 volunteers, 150 women’s groups and farmer’s clubs to realize Gandhi's dream of governance at the village level.
Peru: More than 2,100 communities covering one-third of the population are partnering with government to manage their own primary health care facilities. Future Generations Peru strengthens this national system and has reduced chronic child malnutrition from 46% to 18% in pilot sites.
