Afghanistan: Community Development Councils in Nangarhar Complete 31 Projects Based on Local Priorities

On June 15, 2010, the Afghanistan National Solidarity Programme (NSP) issued a press release recognizing the achievements of Community Development Councils (CDCs) in Khogyani District of Nangarhar Province. Since 2007, Future Generations Afghanistan has been working to build the capacity of these CDCs in local governance.

31 Uplift Projects Completed in Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan

Thirty-one public utility projects, based on local priorities and implemented with a 10% community contribution, will benefit 8,210 Afghan families in Nangarhar Province. The projects include:

  • Construction of four social center buildings
  • Three safe drinking water reservoirs
  • 40-meter water intake system
  • A retaining wall 682 meters in length
  • A 20-meter irrigation canal
  • 30 concrete culverts
  • Excavation of seven wells equipped with hand pump installation
  • Establishment of a number of female tailoring and literacy courses

The projects were completed in Khogyani districts of Nangarhar province at a sum of 21,289,000 Afghanis ($461,400 U.S dollars).

The NSP (established in 2003 within the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development) works with 22,000 community development councils (CDCs) in Afghanistan to strengthen local governance so that communities can manage their own development projects. Future Generations Afghanistan acts an implementing partner with the NSP to train CDCs and help locals develop effective workplans to meet their needs.

In 2010, the NSP expanded its coverage to 9,000 more communities and continued a third round of funding for existing CDCs. Hundreds of other MRRD/NSP development projects in various communities of Nangarhar Province are currently under construction.
