Future Generations Afghanistan PROGRAM FOCUS: Future Generations Afghanistan supports the re-building of a stable civil society in Afghanistan by training local people in a process of community-based change designed to:
Future Generations Afghanistan currently works in partnership with over 350 communities in the three provinces of Bamian, Dai Kundi and Ghazni and is working to establish an Afghan Academy to train local people who are able to support Afghan communities in designing and implementing strategies to meet local needs. PROGRAM STRATEGY: To support the recovery process in which the entire country is now engaged, Future Generations Afghanistan builds the capacity of communities, particularly women, to develop locally sustainable development programs in literacy, health and other needed sectors. Future Generations Afghanistan provides skills training and teaches communities how to adapt the SEED-SCALE methodology, a tested process for building decision-making capacity and taking local action based on coordinated work plans. As communities succeed in local initiatives, establish local coordinating committees and grow in capacity, they will become regional training centers to teach and extend change to other communities. Currently, Future Generations Afghanistan works as a partner to support the following community-driven initiatives:
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: Future Generations has played a significant role in helping to:
HISTORY OF PARTNERSHIP: Prior to September 11, 2001, Future Generations provided limited technical support to community-based health projects in the central highlands. Future Generations ' chairperson of the Board, Hon. Flora MacDonald, had also been a long advocate of Afghanistan and has visited the country many times. Following the crises that brought international attention to bear on Afghanistan, Future Generations recognized the urgent need as well as the contribution that it could make as an outside-in partner. The organization sought the advice of colleagues with more than 30 years of experience in Afghanstan, and began working in the central Hazarajat region in June 2002. Fortunately, from the very beginning, Future Generations Afghanistan has had two great assetts: 1) a process to engage communities in creating a better future, and 2) Afghan staff from the global diaspora community who wanted to return to their communities, who are creative and sensitive to the needs of local people, and who have a high degree of trust and credibility in their communities. PARTNERS: Afghanistan Ministry of Education, Afghanistan Ministry of Women's Affairs, Shuras (Village Councils) in the Bamian, Ghazni and Dai Kundi Provinces, Itehad Foundation.
