A Zero Energy Use Office:

Building on the tradition of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Windstar Foundation, Future Generations has taken the next step in green design by building a zero-energy use office.

The wind generator located at 3600 feet provides all the energy needed to power Future Generations' international headquarters. Solar panels on the roof heat water that is stored in an insulated holding tank and then pump throughout radiant-heat tubing in the floor.

The building itself is super energy-efficient. The shell is made of polyurethane stress-skin panels: the walls have an R-value of 28 and the roof an R-value of 41. The windows are triple-paned and filled with argon. Lighting fixtures are energy-efficient fluorescents.

This office was officially dedicated on October 5, 2001 as the Andrus Center for Global Outreach: Promoting a Just and Lasting Future for All People.
